Consider this the “sign” you have been waiting for. The one where you say to yourself the time is now. I am meant to do this. I CAN do this!
How long have you been searching for the hobby or job that makes you happy?
Perhaps you have heard of the saying:
“If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
– Marc Anthony
**Remember everyone is different. What worked for me may not work for you. You know yourself best. Do what is right for you.**
Okay so let me tell you a bit about my past and how it might help your future.
Back in the day I had started my first job like everyone else. I had a couple of jobs at once, while going to college. I worked overnight at the one job. Then I would wake up and go to school. After school I would head to my other job. I was a complete zombie within months. I do not recommend this to anyone. The sad part is -I know a lot of college folks that probably do this.
Being tired was not even the thing that made me the most unhappy. I can recall one vivid memory that plays in my mind still today. This was a couple of months into my new work/college juggle. I was walking out of the building of my second job after one of my shifts. The sun was almost set at this point. (That was a rarity because I usually worked until 11 pm.) I was walking to my car. Then I thought to myself “Is this really what people do with their entire lives?” I continued to think…”is this what I am going to do with the rest of my life?” It really sucked. I am not going to sugar coat it. I know there are a bunch of people that like working nights. I definitely was not one of them. The bigger problem was that I did not like my job. In fact I did not like any of the jobs I had. Interestingly enough, I did like my college coursework. I was very interested in business and marketing.
As I continued to think things over in my head, I knew working for someone else was probably never going to make me happy.
After I had my first child, I knew for sure there had to be a better way to live. I couldn’t understand how we as people have gotten so far away from actually living.
Just like many of you, even though I knew what was right in my heart, I just couldn’t make the numbers work out financially. For several more years I just kept doing what I was always doing. Going to work for someone else and missing out on precious moments I will never get back. In addition to that I was completely miserable. It was always so stressful to try to please other people. I created a lot of new procedures and techniques that saved a lot of money for the companies I worked for. I used to be one of those nerds that brought my work home with me. I really wanted to be successful. What I finally realized was that I am only making someone ELSE more successful, not me.
Eventually out of an odd series of events, I became a stay at home mom. It was not really a choice per say, but something that our family kind of just fell into. Even as a stay at home mom I still worked from home. I have a couple of (what I consider) small business ventures that I tend to for the most part now.
As exciting as being a stay at home mom is, it is also really challenging. I enjoy being with my kids. This is one aspect where I really feel like I am actually “living my life”. Something that still bothers me in a small way is my other business ventures. There is a lot of things I would like to change. My other work from home duties include a lot of paperwork, accounting, marketing, and so much more.
During all of these changes of my life, I have always been a big Pinterest fan. Somehow a couple of years ago I started coming across more and more blogging posts. I then at that point thought that blogging would be so fun. I love to read, write and encourage people. I had read so many stories about bloggers that made it big. I read more stories about up and coming bloggers. Everything was so inspiring.
Needless to say, I was smitten. Just the idea of setting up a blog and sharing things I have learned from my mistakes seemed so fascinating! I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to help other people sleep better at night. I think it all comes from my horoscope. (lol) People that are into horoscopes say Aquarians are natural humanitarians. Well I guess they at least summed up this Aquarian right.
I finally took the plunge and signed up with Bluehost. I was so nervous. I really should not have been so nervous though. I had done my research. I knew that Bluehost had incredible reviews. It was easy to see they offered so much at such a small cost. Per month Bluehost was the same as buying a can of coffee. (Actually right now they have prices LOWER than HALF the cost of a Starbucks coffee!)
I felt like I had nothing to lose. They have a 30 day money back guarantee. There are not too many things you get to try before you totally commit out there anymore. Signing up comes with 24 hour, 7 day a week support. Call them anytime or start an online chat to get your questions answered. Oh did I mention right now you get a FREE domain name? That is about an $10-$15 savings depending on where you go!
I did make one huge mistake though when I signed up. When you sign up you get a few options to choose from. The lowest tier is for the purchase of a year plan billed at the monthly promotional rate. HOWEVER, you can purchase a longer term plan for several years at the promotional rate.
I WISH I WOULD HAVE BEEN SMART ENOUGH TO BUY THE LONGER TERM PLAN AT THE AMAZING PROMOTIONAL RATE. This mistake will cost me hundreds of dollars. Live and learn I guess. I still think about it with regret. I could have spent that hundreds of dollars that I am wasting (but not buying the longer term plan when I signed up!) in a way better and more entertaining way.
The thing is when you first sign up you get an incredible discounted price. You can take advantage and prepay for I believe 4 years or more in advance…at the promotional rate!!! This means you get years of savings!
This is where my frugal self failed to see the long term savings. Unfortunately for me when I go to renew at the end of the year term, I am not able to renew at the promotional price.
Learn from my mistake! Buy in advance! Who plans on blogging for just a year? That seems silly. Besides, buying in advance guarantees you your domain name for that length of time. You can renew your subscription at any time to prepay longer into the future. This will secure your domain name for as long as you wish by renewing in advance.
Now that you have learned from one of my many oopsie moments, here is one more that will give you a chuckle. One day I had logged into my site like any other time before. Everything was great. All of the changes that you want to make are so simple. Almost everything was at the click of the button.
Don’t get the wrong idea though. A lot of the things that you want to fill in and customize are easy through Bluehost/Wordpress, but there are a lot of changes you will want to make. It will take a great deal of time. Remember, you reap what you sow. Put the hard work in now, to reap rewards later!
Back to my little oopsie moment. As I was chugging along creating content and customizing my website my computer started to freeze up. Now when this happens you do not want to get frustrated and start clicking the button you want to use 50 times. This is because #1 it will not work anyways, #2 it will not fix the problem, and #3 BECAUSE YOU MIGHT BE CLICKING TOO CLOSE TO THE “MAKE WEBSITE LIVE BUTTON” AND YOU ARE NOT READY!!!
Sooo, that said – #3 happened. I froze in shock for a few moments. Now, I know that there might be something I can do to put my website under construction, but I did not know that back then.
In all honestly though, that crazy oopsie was the best thing that happened to me. I am a procrastinator. Especially when I get nervous. I was nervous people would not like my content. I was nervous about people not liking my website at all! I honestly planned to work on my website for a few weeks to a month before making it live. The only thing is I know myself better than that. If that oopsie of hitting that live button did not happen, I probably would still be making excuses and still tweaking my not live website.
Looking back on all of this I would have missed out on so much. The biggest thing that impacted me is when I had one specific thought.
What if I did not start my blog when I did? I don’t know if any of my blog posts have helped anyone specifically. What if someone out there has read my posts and has found even one of them useful? The fact that I could have already made someone’s life a little bit easier and brighter (by either making more money or saving time) makes me feel so incredibly happy and purposeful.
The best part is that the things that I did not know about blogging, I easily found all the answers by using the power of the internet! I still have so much to work on for this blog and more people to try and reach out to.
There are people out there that believe in “signs”. Seeing how you are reading this post right now, you might be one of them. This is your sign. If I can do this, you definitely can do this. Starting a blog is something anyone can do. All you need is basic computer skills, a passion, and determination. You can do this if you tell yourself you can do this and push forward.
The longer you wait the more excuses you will make just like I did. I just needed to take the leap. I am still learning as I go. Which by the way most bloggers have started by doing this! If you are persistent you can make this work!
Think about all the people you could affect for the better if you just started now. There are lots of people that share the same passions. If you just started now…you could bring people together that share your passion at your blog.
Of course one of the huge fringe benefits is that you have the option to monetize your blog! Helping people+making money = ? What would that equal for you?
Monetizing is not hard work. IT IS A LOT OF WORK. Is it worth it? I would say for myself it is absolutely worth it. It is easy work but a lot of it. You have to be consistent and patient. Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. For some bloggers things just take off and they start making money a lot faster than others. For most it is one solid step at a time. The positive part about all of this work that you put in, is that eventually a lot of your blog can be automated.
Blogging is what makes me happy. Just writing posts and thinking about new ideas for my blog makes me happy. After all these years I have found something (besides my family of course!) that I sincerely look forward to doing. I can tell you that to me blogging does not feel like work.
Are you ready to share your passion with the world? Can you grab the courage within and pour it into a blog? Well if the answer is yes… here is the link to Bluehost to get started.
The only way you will be closer to having your own blog…is to take that first step to start!
Blogging is what works for me. Maybe it isn’t for you. This is your time and your decision. 🙂
