1 Weird Trick that gets picky eaters to eat anything…no gimmicks!

I am so super extremely excited to write this post!

Why? BECAUSE I HAVE THE WORLD’S PICKIEST EATERS IN MY HOUSE AND IT DRIVES ME NUTS!

The problem:

Trying to feed a Picky Eater is way harder than it sounds.  Most importantly, like most picky eaters – my kids were missing out on some of the seriously health benefits of some of the most nutritious foods on the planet.  Kids are in their prime growing phases and need the best nutrition they can possibly get. (We all do – but for kids it’s especially important.)

So, I looked for -for a long time- a way that I could get my little kiddos to get the nutrition they need without pulling out my hair.  Have you ever tried to talk any picky eater into eating something that they “don’t like”? Ugh, it can be tough stones doing that.  Some of the time these picky eaters have never even TRIED the food that they claim not to like.

I tried a bunch of things that I got from pinterest, friends, reading online, family, and overall anything that I thought would remotely work – I tried.

EVERYTHING I TRIED FAILED…HORRIBLY….

Until I stumbled on one miraculous trick…that works EVERY, SINGLE, TIME!

No fighting, no more failed attempts, and no more feeling stressed about this one thing that I really can’t fail at – no matter what.

What I was doing wrong – My attempts:

What did I try?

I tried making food fun by different colors and shapes. Nope.  Did not make a difference at all.

1)  I tried giving the health speech.  I explained why nutrition is so important and how it helps our bodies.  I explained each and every type of food that was on their plate (I have 3 picky eaters – all in different ways), and what the benefits were of each food were. My kids were interested in the facts, tried the world’s smallest bite and then left 99% of food on the plate.  I will say some of them liked maybe one type of food at this meal, but one of my children that is my ultimate picky eater managed to resist them all.  I do want to say though, that her picky eating isn’t just limited to healthy foods, she doesn’t like pop (which none of kids are allowed to have yet – but we had it once at an outing because water was insanely more expensive) and some fast foods. (Which we almost never eat out anyways – because it is a total budget buster.)

2)   I tried the good ‘ol fashion way of telling my kids “this is what is for dinner, and that’s it – if you don’t eat it, you will go to bed hungry.”  Yep, that failed REAL fast.  They just ate what they did like and shrugged their shoulders and said okay.  I was thinking in my head…um no.. this is the part where you eat your dinner kids….

3.)   Miscellaneous – I tried about a couple dozen other tricks in between the ones that I just mentioned.

I was getting no where, and fast.

Now, listen – I know some people say picky eaters are made not born.  I can tell you at least for my kids this is not true.  I have given them all sorts of different types of food, and attempted to give the same foods prepared in different ways multiple times.

My daughter will try anything…she might not like it- but she will try it.  I started to notice that she would try to eat things that she had tried before and that I already knew she did not like.  I think at this point she was trying to make me happy- because she would start to eat something, make the craziest faces and then keep chewing only to start to gag on the taste.  There are 2 things wrong with that.  Number 1, I don’t want my kids to have to feel like food and meal times are a chore ( I can easily see someone developing a food disorder this way) and number 2 – I don’t want my kids to grow up with a complex about doing things only to please people.  I could be totally wrong, but that’s my opinion.

That was the end of it.  There is no point in making someone feel that they need to really eat something that they can’t get past the taste of it.

I love my kids.  I want to help them through life and find solutions, not make meal times a problem.

I thought to myself…my kids take vitamins…is this really a huge deal and is it worth it to keep fighting this battle?

Yes, it is a huge deal, and yes it is worth it to keep fighting this battle.  I lost all the battles so far…but I will win the war! (movie junkie, sorry)

There had to be a better way!

YES! There IS A BETTER WAY!

How I finally made things right – My accidental miracle discovery:

I only discovered this method completely by accident.

(Hold on and bare with me a second,  here’s a little back story that will make everything make sense.)

I bought a blender so that I could make Ice coffees/Ice cappuccinos at home.  (Because those blasted things are so bloody expensive!) I couldn’t see even buying 1 cappuccino a week. (Even though I really would have liked too.)

—->  Additional Money Saving Bonus Tip: For the folks that love to buy coffee and other fancy drinks like I used to –

It might sound crazy to you to cut back on buying coffee but quickly let’s look at the numbers:

1 Iced cappuccino = $4 x 4 times a month (1 a week) = $16 for the month

$16 a month x 12 months in a year = $192

I can think of a lot of things I could use $192 for.  I could upgrade my jawbone up24 fitness tracker to a fitbit charge 2 hr so that I could keep better track of my health.  If I preach to my kids about doing the right things and being healthy, I should be making an example out of myself.

So let’s take this thought a bit further.  I could skip Ice cappuccino’s all together. (it is just a over priced drink – after all. Tasty but not necessary)

I could buy that fitbit. (or fill in the blank for something that you really have been wanting lately)

I could essentially get a fitbit for “free” from all of my savings…no coupons needed!

Okay, last time…let’s stretch this thought even FURTHER – I could shop through EBATES to buy my fitbit, earn cash back on my purchase…and then it’s like I made money for buying my fitbit….WOW…yeah! sign me up!

Okay sorry about that tangent – but saving money is more than just saving a few bucks now.  As parents, we have to think about saving for college, retirement, grandchildren, traveling etc. Whenever I think of a way I can save you money – I’ll add it right into any blog post.  You deserve to know the feeling of financial freedom, and I want to help achieve that – even if we have to stack up the pennies all the way there.

The MIRACLE solution to picky eaters:

HERE IT IS FOLKS. HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS!

THE SOLUTION!

I use my Vitamix to make my kids “Smoothies and Ice cream” (plus those Iced capps I was talking about before!)

This is NOT a sponsored post.  The Vitamix in these photos is MY OWN MACHINE, that I bought with my own money over a year ago.

Okay so I make my kids smoothies…big deal right?

Oh it’s a big deal alright.  Because I’ll put all the healthy good stuff in there they wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole, and they.like.it.every.single.time….!

THEY REALLY LIKE IT!  My kids are THRILLED! They think they are getting desserts and treats!  They ask me to make these smoothies all.the.time.

But the entire time…I put in onion, garlic, carrots, melon, healthy spices…whatever healthy foods I have in my house – gets dumped in the Vitamix…and THEY EAT ALL OF IT!

Do my kids know I put these ingredients in…well..no…they don’t…and honestly – they don’t need to know.

I put in small portions of these “secret ingredient” foods and because I use fruits and veggies that they do like as the majority ingredient…they never know.  I will tell them someday…when they are a little bit older…like 30.

Food is no longer an issue in my house.  That’s it. Completely solved.  I love it.  I love seeing my kids happy, and I am so happy.

It’s like the partridge family…without the music and the bus….okay that may be a step too far…but you get the point.

You probably have seen a Vitamix machine and maybe not even realized it.

A lot of juicing stores, food network, chopped chef, any cooking show almost always use a Vitamix.  I found this out while I was combing the internet for the answers that I so desperately needed.

Why? Because these machines are extremely durable and powerful.  Mine came with a 5 year warranty!  Is that even still a thing these days?? Usually when I buy something I hear it has a 1 year warranty or LESS…yikes..

Then I watched a preview of the machine being used.  Not only is it strong enough to pulverize ice into slush – but it takes whatever you put into it and completely blends it with all the other ingredients making each ingredient unrecognizable if you choose….this sounded pretty perfect to me so far…

Why a Vitamix? Can’t I just use any blender?

I say this ever so hesitantly…You could technically use any blender, even yours if you have one…BUT please understand – please do not get mad at me if your blades get dull, the machine stops working, has a short lifespan.  The only other problem is that I have not seen or heard of a blender that completely chops and shreds vegetable bits into unrecognizable shreds into a smoothie.  I say all of this because – well I’ll just tell you what happened to me before I had the Vitamix, and thought I could just use any blender.

I bought a Ninja blender because it was on sale and everyone was all gung-ho about those this brand.  I figured, that they had pretty good reviews, and everyone I knew that had one really like theirs.  My brother even has a new Ninja and he liked it so..I was on my way and bought one.

I originally wanted a blender to make iced coffees and froofy drinks that I don’t like to pay an arm and a leg for.

Well come to find out those fancy drinks that I wanted to make were going to be the death of my blender.  This blender was not made to chop ice for the majority of it’s life.  The blades became really dull and things just went down hill really fast.  I could hear the motor struggling.  I only noticed this because as time went on the motor started sounding different. (It sounded like I the sounds I made when I don’t want to get out of bed on a morning that I thought I would be able to sleep in.)

Even before the blades on this blender went dull, it had another big issue.  Food chunks would get stuck and lodged under the blades.  This led to food waste.  (The average American throws out $640 of food a year. -According to The American Chemistry Council — I could definitely think of a lot of things I could do with $640 instead of tossing it in the garbage.) It just seemed ridiculous to me that food was being wasted because it was getting stuck or wrapped around under the blades.  I know I didn’t overload the blender because it was not even halfway full.  My pieces were all small sized going in..it just didn’t make sense.  I am a full on dweeb and even read the manual to make sure I wasn’t loading it wrong.  When you spend a lot of money on something, you really expect it to do exactly what it promises.  After being let down and not finding any solutions – I read online that many folks with different blenders of all different makes and models had the same issue.  Ugh, sigh.

I started doing serious research to find a blender that would really stand up to the test of time with ICE.

If I was serious about saving money in the long run, and didn’t want to throw non-blended food pieces in the garbage, I had to make a smarter investment purchase.  Yes, I say investment because I knew I would be making these smoothies almost daily to meet my kid’s nutritional needs.

This is how I found the Vitamix.  I did my research, watched the Vitamix in a bunch of videos, and was impressed by the several year warranty that came with it.

I use my Vitamix for my Kid’s healthy nutritional rich smoothies:

How to make a secretly super healthy smoothies and ice cream:

Before you get started here is a super quick tip that will save you a bunch of time:

Additional Quick Tip:  The difference between ice cream and a smoothie in a Vitamix is not only how much liquid you put in but how you blend it.

The rule of thumb is – a little less liquid + on high (after turning the dial up) = Ice cream

More liquid base (like milk or yogurt) + no changes in high/variable setting = Smoothie

Watch me make a “blueberry” smoothie…

You’ll never believe what the ingredients are…it’s not just blueberries….

1.) Get your Vitamix ready to use.

2.) Grab all of your ingredients…this is a good time to make sure the kids are doing their homework in another room… 😉

Take a look at the ingredients I put into this Blueberry Smoothie:

Yes, that’s an onion piece that went in.  No one of my kids ever noticed the difference.  The key is to adding in crazy ingredients like..onions..is just to put a small amount in.  If you start to put handfuls the taste of your “secret ingredient” over powers the main ingredient (Use your child’s favorite ingredient as the main ingredient.)

Additional Tip #2 – Use frozen fruits and vegetables.  You can toss in items that are not frozen, but somehow the extra icy cold of the frozen-ness makes the hidden healthy foods even more undetectable.  If you have fresh items instead of frozen just wash them, chop them up in smaller pieces and put them in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Now I purposely purchase frozen fruits and vegetables to skip this step, and honestly a lot of the time they are cheaper to buy frozen than fresh.

Then add your liquid base and then add whatever food items you want

Blend together (refer to my little tip at the top based on if you want a smoothie or ice cream)

Ta da!  You are finished. Just pour into a cup – add a straw if you would like and you are ready for the kiddies to gobble it up.  Just think, they are eating broccoli, onion, berries, and enriching their bodies with nutrition they probably wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

Be creative! We use a bunch of different items, I just put in whatever I have on hand.  Pears, garlic, (only a tad! but it’s better than not eating it at all!) pomegranate, apples, EVERYTHING! Don’t forget about asking your doctor or nutritionist about things like extra fiber, flax seeds, pre/pro biotics…there are so many benefits that your kids could be getting!!! It is so exciting!

This machine does WAY MORE than just smoothies and ice cream.

The Vitamix is also SELF CLEANING. (Can I get a hallelujah!)

Just add water when it is empty after use, squirt in some dish soap (As you can probably tell by the bottle – I use a natural dish soap, Mrs. Meyers Honeysuckle and oh does it smell great! I love things that smell good!) and turn the blender on for 60 seconds or less.

Rinse with water and it’s clean! No extra dishes…watch my video to see it in action!

Then I quickly clean up any other mess I made with Mrs. Meyers Multi-Surface Cleaner.  I mention this because this is a safer choice to clean items like counter tops that come in close contact at one point or another with food.  Plus, it smells so good.  If you can’t tell already, I love a house that smells fresh, it’s an instant mood lifter for me.

Below is a photo of some bananas I quickly sliced in advance (for a different smoothie I made), then tossed into a Pyrex freezer safe glass (healthier than plastic) container.

You could use freezer bags…but then you throw them away…which is like throwing money in the garbage.

Would you take money out of your purse and throw it in the garbage? Of course not! Sometimes we all do just that…without even realizing it.  (Including me – I’ve been there, done that.)

I have 4 sets of Pyrex.  2 Sets are food storage containers like this one pictured.  The other 2 sets are the Pyrex baking dishes…that have built in handle holes and LIDS! They are microwave, freezer and oven safe.

These come in handy so often, and I saved so much money – over time – if they haven’t already – they will pay for themselves. (Buy the Pyrex and sell your other items on ebay…make your money back and it’s like your new Pyrex was FREE!)

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

I used the bananas to make a different smoothie for one of my sons.  He loves bananas.  I just tossed in bananas, onion piece, melon, and milk.

The Vitamix does so much more!:

  • Hot soup! Yes this is so true, it’s actually hot.  So how about making a healthy, hot soup in about 7 minutes, no cooking required? No extra dishes! SIGN ME UP FOLKS! I’ve washed enough dishes in my time, that ship has sailed.
  • Baby Food – You never have to worry about what is in your baby’s food again.  Plus, you don’t have to buy a baby food machine and then have no use for it after the baby is eating solids!
  • Flours & Dough
  • Nut butters, – Fresh peanut butter is awesome I have tried it. Plus it is so much healthier.
  • Frozen desserts
  • Batters – No more messes pouring the batters either!!!
  • Dressings and sauces
  • Non – Dairy Milks
  • Other smoothies
  • Juices
  • Dips and spreads
  • Food prep – It can chop and dice!
  • There are so many other uses and recipes..there has to be hundreds of ideas…
  • Be creative! The possibilities are endless!

Below is a photo of strawberry, pineapple, mango, carrots, and melon ice cream! (I am working on capturing better photos, so that it doesn’t take me so long to try to get one that looks decent! Lol)

Think of all the of gadgets in your kitchen you could sell and make money if you had a Vitamix.

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

I’m not trying to sound salesy, I feel like maybe it may come off that way…but my life has changed a lot for the better since I invested in this machine.

If it worked for me this well, I want to share this awesome trick with other parents that struggle to get their picky eaters to eat food that will nourish their little bodies while growing.

I feel like a better mom.  I feel like a better wife, now that I can find creative ways to still put at least a hot soup for a meal on the table without much effort, even when I am uber busy.

When I say investment, I say that because it is not a cheap machine, and for good reason. I was investing in my kid’s health.  It kind of makes me think of the phrase “you get what you pay for”.  It’s totally true with the Vitamix.  I can see why businesses use these machines and rely on them to offer premium desserts, shakes and juices.

Vitamix blenders range from about $299 and up, depending on the model you purchase. WAIT! I know that sounds like a lot…but if you break it down…

it’s like it only costs LESS THAN $5 a month:

Okay, it sounds crazy – but look at the numbers –

My Vitamix came with a 5 year warranty.  So at least for that time I was guaranteed that I would have a functioning machine that works as it should.

Okay so $299 divided by the 5 years I was promised =  $59.80 a year…that’s less than a lot of my other bills..

Hold on – it gets better.  That means if I break it down further @ $59.80 per year divided by 12 (months in a year) = $4.98 per month…that is less than what Netflix costs per month.

Last one, promise.  I use this almost daily.  So $4.98 a month – divided by (30 days i’ll say) = .17 cents a day

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

There’s another bonus!

There is a really good chance that if you take care of your machine, that it will last a lot longer than 5 years.  So your cost just dropped yet again.

That is a lot of money to pay upfront at once.  I get it.  I had a hard time wrapping my head around it at first too. I looked at the numbers though, and I realized that if I can’t choose my kid’s health over something that costs less a month then Netflix, I would have some real explaining to do to.

But I also had to remember, this machine would be like any other appliance in my kitchen – like a stove, except it has more ways I could use it!

I can cook, prep and replace so many other gadgets and machines in my house.  I highly suggest if you do purchase a Vitamix, that you do sell your unused gadgets in your kitchen…which will drive your costs down yet again…Sell your old stuff on ebay and make money to pay yourself back for the Vitamix.

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

In fact here is a way to make the Vitamix FREE and pay for itself: (Use these ideas to make other things in your life pay for themselves too!)

  1. Sell your no longer used kitchen gadgets and other small appliances
  2. Intentionally put fruits and veggies that will not be fresh much longer into these smoothies and desserts (You will no longer be that American that throws away approx. $640 a year on food waste!) If you think about it that way – your food waste alone would pay for 2 of these machines!
  3. Save money on meals by making more soups etc.
  4. Less dishes for cooking – so less soap for washing the dishes and less running the dishwasher (if you wash dishes by hand, look at the time you’ll save!)
  5. Costs less to operate than to fire up the ‘ol stove
  6. Saves money from eating out desserts, specialty coffees, and if you are into it things like Margaritas
  7. Use for parties, instead of buying an endless varieties of drinks – make custom drinks! Only use what you need!
  8.  Meal planning and budgeting.  You can make peanut butter from home instead of paying X amount of dollars per jar. Wouldn’t it be nice to buy less at the grocery store?
  9. Possibly be sick less often, which will knock out some of those co-pays, medicines, etc.  Nutrition supposedly has a huge effect on human health.  (My brother is a certified Nutritionist and he talks about all the perks of eating well, often.)

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

Above all reasons, I made the Vitamix purchase because of, and for my kids.

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

I didn’t want to go to bed at night having regrets. I didn’t want to look back in 20 years and say I wish I would have done more for them, or every time they are sick wonder if it’s because I didn’t support their immune system like I knew I should have.

As many of us do, I have regrets with other things/decisions I have made in my past – and I wasn’t going to make my kid’s nutrition yet another mistake to add to my list of life mistakes.

I am a mom that loves her kids, just like you.

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

This is what worked for my family, and ended our picky eating struggles.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline
